MEETING REVIEW

Hot Rods

Gordon Ogilvie was a welcome visitor from Scotland in his unusual Volkswagen Corrado and the Scotsman was joined on the grid by Sticky Torrens in his Ford Fiesta, former Stock Rod racer John Bonnar in an immaculate Toyota Starlet, the Classic Hot Rod of Clive Richardson and a two car entry of Vauxhall Tigra National Hot Rods from the Stewart’s Garage Team, driven by Andrew Stewart and Ed Litter.  Stewart laid a marker down in the opening heat with a tidy win, chased home by Richardson and Ogilvie. The roles were reversed in heat two as Richardson nipped into an early lead and withstood the challenged of Stewart to claim a good win ahead of Stewart and Ogilvie. With the heat winners tied on points a draw was required to determine who would start on pole for the final and this went the way of Stewart. That would prove crucial as Stewart managed to get his nose ahead on the opening lap and once settled into the groove Stewart stretched out a healthy advantage to secure the Winter National Trophy with a sterling drive. Richardson had his hands full with Ogilvie over the closing stages as the Scotsman really got to gripes with the track, but managed to hold on for second, with the finishing order completed by Ogilvie, Bonnar and Litter.

Stock Rods

 

Two graded order heat races determined the grid positions for the final and the first of these was led until the half way stage by Alistair Christie. The pack had Christie under all sorts of pressure by this time however and a 3 abreast moment coming out of turn four looked a recipe for trouble on the greasy surface and so it proved, with Christie hard into the wall at the start-finish line along with Steve Gooch. Both were out on the spot and when the action resumed it was Sam McKinstry who darted home for the victory ahead of Jason Clyde and Kurtis Reid. Heat two brought a flag to flag win for Clyde, while Steven McKane enjoyed a good run in his ex-Mark Turtle Corsa B to finish second, with Reid third once more. Heat winners Clyde and McKinstry occupied the front row for the closed grid final and it was a determined McKinstry who snatched the advantage on the opening lap. Shea Duff made an excellent start from row three to run in second spot and quickly made his move on lap five to take over out front. Reid followed through in Duff’s wheel tracks and chased the leader hard throughout, but Duff managed to maintain a safe gap at the front to complete a tidy win. Reid was good value for second, with Clyde , Daniel Rodgers, Harold Johnston and McKinstry rounding out the top six.

Group Twos

Newcomers Dylan Magee and Lee Topping engaged in a keen tussle for the lead during the opening heat. As their battle intensified the pair eventually tripped over each other at Fisherwick bend, which delayed both, and allowed Clive Wilson to motor through in the final stages and take the chequered flag. Wilson was penalised by the steward for an infringement in this one however, which handed victory to Irish Champion Paul Nesbitt with Magee promoted to second and Wilson relegated to third. Heat two followed a similar pattern to the first, with the impressive pair of Magee and Topping out front once more. There were no dramas in the closing stages this time however as Magee coaxed his Vauxhall Astra to a handsome maiden victory ahead of Topping and David Gillespie. When the points were tallied up from the heats it was Magee who qualified on pole position for the Winter National Trophy, with Nesbitt alongside for company on the front row, followed by Wilson and Topping on row two. The experienced duo of Nesbitt and Wilson soon had Magee under attack in the final and Wilson made the most of the slightest gap to squeeze ahead on lap two. With a clear track ahead of him Wilson quickly made his escape and even a late race caution period could not disrupt his progress to the silverware after a dominant drive. Magee completed an eye-catching set of results with a strong run to second, while David Nesbitt got the better of brother Paul to snatch third at the flag, with the top six rounded out by Paul Nesbitt, Andy McLeister and Topping.

Street Rods

Junior Rod recruit Mark Brogan marked his Street Rod debut with a comprehensive flag to flag victory in the opening heat. Shannon Morrow set the pace in heat two and was soon joined at the front by Gareth Robinson. The pair fought out an entertaining side by side scrap for a number of laps before Robinson elbowed his way ahead on lap ten. Morrow’s race went from bad to worse on the next lap when her Vauxhall Corsa got out of shape on the exit of turn two and tipped into a gentle roll. On the road winner Robinson received a penalty for that earlier incident which handed a second win of the day to Brogan. James Taylor edged ahead in the early laps of the final before Brogan slipped ahead on lap three and scampered clear in his Citroen Saxo to complete a perfect hat-trick of wins. Newcomer Adam Simpson followed the winner home in his immaculate Ford Fiesta.

Junior Rods

Jason McMullan led from the start in heat one, but Jack Morrow was soon chasing the novice down at a rapid rate of knots. Morrow had the leader in his sights as the lap boards appeared, but McMullan had just enough in reserve to tease out a well deserved success ahead of the fast finishing Morrow and Josh Gooch. McMullan set the pace in heat two as well, but Morrow was on the leader’s case by lap 5 this time and quickly breezed through for a commanding victory ahead of Jonathan Brown and McMullan. Those heat results earned Morrow pole position for the final and he made no mistake from there to record his second win of the afternoon in resounding fashion. With Brown equally secure in second position attention switched to a very enjoyable scrap between McMullan and Gooch for third. The pair circulated side by side for a number of laps before Gooch made a tidy move stick around the wide outside to claim the final spot on the podium. McMullan and Ty Richardson completed the finishers.
